Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark. I have been fortunate to visit it several times, but these photographs were taken on my first visit during the August Bank Holiday weekend in 2001.

These pictures were taken on a 35mm camera and scanned in.

kimbofo > It's almost impossible to take a bad photograph of Nyhavn, the trendy cafe quarter, because it is so picture-postcard perfect.

kimbofo > This is Christiania on the outskirts of Copenhagen. It was set up in 1971 on an abandoned military base by a group of hippies and anarchists. It's a place where the Danish authorities turn a blind eye to the dope smoking and drug peddling that goes on here. But its occupants forbid photographs being taken, particulary of its hash kiosks, so this is the closest I came to taking a picture of the place without risking life and limb . . .

kimbofo > This is the Elephant Gate, built in 1901, at the Carlsberg Brewery.

kimbofo > The Elephant Gate at Carlsberg is supported by four five-metre tall elephants carved in granite from the Danish island of Bornholm.

kimbofo > Hans Christian Andersen wrote a fairy tale about her and this is a statue made in her honour, which just so happens to be Copenhagen's most famous tourist attraction. She was smaller than I imagined, so perhaps it's appropriate that she's called The LITTLE Mermaid.
