kimbofo  > Travel > Australia > Cradle Mountain, Tasmania
Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park is part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

It's an amazing- and totally captivating - part of the world. The rugged and beautiful landscape comprises ancient rainforests, alpine heathlands, open plains and glacial lakes.

These photographs were taken in December 2004 using a Sony Cybershot DSC-W1

kimbofo > My first real view of Cradle Mountain. It was named by Joseph Fossey in 1826 because he thought it looked like a cradle
kimbofo > Note the party of tourists in this picture. Their red jackets were a warning to me to speed up and put some distance between me and them. It worked. I barely saw a soul during the entire 15km-plus trek I went on
kimbofo > The top of Cradle Mountain obscured by cloud and mist became a familiar sight. The mist did not burn off until mid-afternoon
kimbofo > This is a quite striking Tasmanian Snow Gum near Picnic Cove on Dove Lake. It was at the end of a short beach of white quartzite, not that I lingered long due to the inclement weather
kimbofo > This is a species of ancient pine. A nice change from the usual eucalypts you usually see in the Australian bush
kimbofo > I mistakenly thought this was a palm tree. It is, in fact, a pandani, which is not even in the palm family. Lovely and unusual-looking trees all the same
kimbofo > It almost looks tropical, doesn't it? Don't be fooled. It was misty and wet and rainy for most of the time it took me to walk the 8.5km circuit
kimbofo > The red flower is a Tasmanian Waratah, providing a welcome splash of colour on a miserably wet and misty morning's outing
kimbofo > The boardwalk around Dove Lake Circuit. It was easy walking, and the chicken-wire stapled to its surface gave a good grip, particularly in the wet
