Copenhagen - 2005 : Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark. This was my third visit to the town, so everything seemed strangely familiar. One morning we took a jump-on, jump-off bus tour around the major sights, which is where most of these pictures were taken. Others, particularly those in the evening, were taken after a night on the town, drinking horrendously expensive pints in an Irish pub off the Walking Street.

Helsingor : Helsingor is a picturesque town in Denmark, north of Copenhagen, best known for being the "home" of Shakespeare's Hamlet: the 16th century castle - Kronborg Slot or Elsinore Castle - is where the drama was set. It is also the closest Danish city to Sweden: the ferry ride across the strait is just 20 minutes.

Dragor : Dragør (pronounced Drah-wer) is sleepy waterfront village, on the island of Amager, 5km south of Copenhagen Airport. It is filled with well-preserved, half-timbered yellow and pink 18th-century cottages with steep red-tile or thatched roofs. We took a wander along the cobblestone streets, oohing-and-ahhing over the gorgeous buildings, before heading to the waterfront proper, where we watched crazy Danes swimming in the freezing Baltic sea.

Skagen - architecture : Skagen is a pretty fishing port in Denmark. It's the most northerly town in Jutland and is famous for its distinctive and cohesive architecture, characterised by yellow houses with red tiled roofs and white detail. But there's a lot more to it than that, as I hope these photographs will testify.

Skagen - Kandestederne : Kandestederne is about 14km south of Skagen, on the northern most tip of Denmark. It's a quiet and secluded place by the sea. It comprises a handful of holiday homes, a couple of hotels and lots and lots of sand dunes. We stayed in a fabulous house overlooking the Rabjerg Mile, a huge migrating sand dune, for a week during March 2004.
