Eden Project : The Eden Project in Cornwall, England, is an environmental complex designed to educate the public about the importance of plant life to our planet. It is built in a disused clay pit and is home to the world's biggest greenhouse.

The Humid Tropics Biome covers 1.6 hectares and houses tropical plants, a working stream and an impressive waterfall.

The Warm Temperate Biome is considerably smaller (0.7 hectares) and houses familiar warm temperate and arid plants such as olives and grape vines.

The Outdoor Biome represents the temperate regions of the world with plants such as tea, lavender, hops and hemp.

St Juliot's, Boscastle, Cornwall : St Juliot's is a church near Boscastle in north-east Cornwall, UK. It's claim to fame is that the writer Thomas Hardy worked on the restoration of the building in the 1870s and it was here that he met his wife-to-be, Emma Gifford, who was the sister-in-law of St Juliot's vicar. The interior of the church features plaques dedicated to both of them, and one of the windows is also dedicated to the author.

Liverpool, England : Liverpool is a waterfront city in the north-west of England. It is most famous for being the hometown of the Beatles. When we visited it in July 2005, we were staggered by the extraordinary mix of architecture and splendid buildings combined with an amazing amount of construction and regeneration work. For decades Liverpool has been left to slide into physical decline, with many pockets of ruin and depravation. However, it looks like the city's fortunes are on the turn, now that it has been named European City of Culture for 2008.

Waddesdon Manor, England : Waddesdon Manor is located near Aylesbury, in Buckinghamshire, England, about 90 minutes north-west of central London.

It is part of the Rothchild Collection and was built in1874-89 in the style of a French 16th century château. It is surrounded by elaborate gardens, including a beautiful Parterre, and an aviary built in the style of a rococo trelliswork pavilion.

During my visit I also got a sneak peak behind the scenes: I was given a tour of the nursery which propagates thousands and thousands of bedding plants every year.

Edinburgh, Scotland : When I first landed on this side of the globe in 1998, I spent quite a bit of time in Scotland. I kept drifting back to the Scottish capital, Edinburgh, which had a mysterious kind of hold on me. It was something to do with the gothic feel of the city, assisted by the mists which often lasted all day, clinging to the granite buildings and the cobbled Royal Mile.

When I returned for a one-day visit in October 2002, which was then these pictures were taken, the sun was out and the place seemed less oppressive than I remembered it.
