Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne : The Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne, Australia, was established in 1846, after Lieutenant Governor Charles La Trobe selected the site on the southern bank of the Yarra River.

In 1857, the Gardens’ first full time director, Ferdinand von Mueller, was appointed, who went on to become one of the most acclaimed botanists of the 19th century.

Today, the gardens are home to more than 51,000 individual plants, representing more than 12,000 different species.

These photographs were taken in March 2006.

Melbourne : Melbourne is the capital city of Victoria in southern Australia.

I was born in Melbourne, but grew up elsewhere. I returned to the city to attend university, and lived there from 1988-1994. It is my favourite Australian city.

These photographs were taken during a two-week visit in March-April 2006.

Bruny Island, Tasmania : Bruny Island, off the southern coast of Tasmania, is two islands joined by a narrow isthmus called 'The Neck'. It lies 40 km south of Hobart, along the A6 to Kettering, where the vehicular ferry, the 'Mirambeena', departs for North Bruny Island several times a day. We visited it one blustery (but sunny) day in December 2004.

Great Ocean Road, Victoria : The Great Ocean Road is very aptly known as one of the greatest scenic drives in the world. It follows Victoria's south-west coast from Geelong in the east to Portland in the west.

It was built as a monument to soldiers who died during the First World War.

You can out more about it's history by visiting

These pictures were taken during our month-long visit to Australia in March 2003. We'd travelled along the Great Ocean Road on a previous trip (when we journied from Melbourne to Adelaide) so this time we made it a little more interesting by starting at Sorrento, which meant we had to catch a car ferry across Port Phillip Bay to the Bellarine Peninsula, and then ended our journey by only going so far as Port Fairy (we then headed inland to the Grampians)

The pictures were taken on a 35mm SLR camera and scanned in.
